ENGLISH COUNTRY DANCING: ROOTED IN THE PAST, DANCING INTO THE FUTURE

The Toronto English Country Dancers in association with the York University Graduate Program in Dance invites you submit paper proposals for their
upcoming conference on June 17-18, 2010: English Country Dancing: Rooted in the Past, Dancing into the Future. The conference will include both
papers and hands-on workshops in music and dance.
Proposals for papers or panels should be in the form of an abstract of 250-350 words, sent electronically in Word format. Papers will be 25 minutes
in length, with additional time for questions. We warmly welcome proposals from independent researchers, academics and all members of the dance
and music communities.
Subject matter should directly relate to English Country Dance and music in all its manifestations, and can include reconstruction, history, music,
community/social aspects, gender, etc.
The conference will take place in Toronto at York University, followed by the dance weekend at a venue downtown.
One of our keynote speakers will be Daniel Walkowitz, a professor in the department of history, New York University. Daniel is well known in ECD circles
as a teacher, researcher, caller and performer. His book City Folk: ECD and the Politics of the Folk in Modern America will be published by New York
University Press in March.
Another of our keynote speakers, as well as our caller for the weekend, will be Colin Hume, renowned caller, choreographer, researcher and composer.
He will participate in the academic part of the event, teach hands-on workshops and call for the weekend of social dancing (Friday, June 18-Sunday, June 20; priced separately).
Special guest Daron Douglas will participate in the conference and be joined by Karen Axelrod to provide the music for the dance weekend.
Accommodation can be arranged either on the York campus or downtown, and a registration fee of $60/$30 for students and the unwaged will be applied to
cover our costs. Single-day fee $35/$18; single-session fee $15/$10.

Full fee paid by June 1, 2010. After June 1, all camp fees will increase by $40.
Families with 2 or more children are eligible for a discount of $40 per child.
All prices in Canadian dollars. Junior & intermediate camp includes a camp t-shirt.
During the children’s camp the boys and girls are separated into two different camping groups placed in semi-circles with the creek bed as a divider.
Teacher and counsellor supervision is 5 camps to one adult. A person qualified in first aid is present at the camp at all times.
All food is prepared by Hungarian cooks and volunteers and includes a variety of Hungarian and Canadian dishes as well.
